THE
TIME TRAVELLER'S GUIDE TO THE FUTURE
The I Ching is one of the world's oldest books, its origins are, of course, shrouded in mystery and cloaked by the mists of time but they are thought to lie with Fu Hsi, the primordial bringer of the gifts of civilisation to China and the world. Daemon Goodhope is the Fu Hsi of the future and his reworking of the I Ching is a much needed attempt to re-popularise the ancient book of knowledge and divination. The book of wisdom has been "updated" by Goodhope in order to bring it to the widest possible audience. The book is not just a new translation but a whole new approach to the I Ching. He provides an extremely simple technique, using shuffled cards rather than the traditional coins or yarrow stalks and he has re-written the often cryptic teaching in a user-friendly modem English - Instead of archaic and poetic musing about warriors and wise Emperors, Goodhope uses plain, direct and pragmatic language. There are few hills but plenty of thrills as Goodhope reveals for the first time the real secrets of the I Ching - secrets which the Chinese masters used to conceal the true truth and wisdom of antiquity. The humble shrine beside the well became a great temple,
a fine city grew up around it.
The well was forgotten and filled with mud.
Drought came and the people moved on.
The temple fell into decay.
Its treasures scattered.
Later, people returned to lovingly restore the ruins.
Yet the well remained blocked.
Now it is time to make the sweet water flow once more.
The Time Travellers Guide to the Future
is more than just a book, it is the best friend you will ever have. By
using the Guide, a link is forged with the spirit itself and a profound
inner harmony develops that subtly alters thoughts and actions for the
better. Life becomes meaningful and one enters into a conversation that
has no end and leads ever deeper into the mysteries of an exquisite world.
The Guide is respectful of those who use it sincerely and treats them as
if they were royalty, it acts as a wise old adviser. It tells you of the
probable consequences of your actions and leaves the decisions to you.
I've spent twenty five years studying the I Ching and trying to live my life according to its principles and practices. It has not been easy, but I've been very successful in my quest. I have written this book so that others may travel on the same road with greater ease and comfort. Other editions of the I Ching, as I have discovered to my cost, are riddled with inaccuracies and are very unreliable. The Time Travellers Guide is clear, unambiguous and easy to use. All the advice is based on the contemplation of actual events rather than theory. Hopefully, this will mean you will go further and learn more than I have.
And it is not just spiritual benefit that comes from using the Guide. Those who know how to follow its advice will have a very real material advantage. Greater wealth and quality of life are to be had for the asking.
DAEMON GOODHOPE.
Getting a clear, valid question is very important if you want to get a clear, valid answer from the I Ching. There are three things a question should be:
1.
RELEVANT.
2.
CAREFULLY FRAMED.
Spend a little time working on the wording of your question and try to make it unambiguous. It is better to ask questions in the positive, for example, 'Should I cross the Antarctic by sledge?'. This is clear and positive whereas 'Should I not cross the Antarctic, but take a job selling insurance instead?' is vague and negative.
3.
WELL TIMED?
It is not a good idea to rush to the I Ching with every whim that passes through your mind. Give the matter careful thought and do some investigation first. Quite often one finds that the answer is clear without using the Guide at all. If there is still uncertainty then it is time to consult the Time Traveller's Guide.
This all may sound quite complicated, but in my experience most people who use the I Ching regularly build up a 'feel' for what to ask and when to ask it. Ultimately you must build your own relationship with the I Ching and use it the way that suits you best.
1.
YOU NEED.
The eight cards supplied with the book (or
ordinary playing cards numbered ace to eight OR use the TTG
Digital Prediction System).
A quiet moment.
A note book and pen.
2.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Check that you have all eight cards.
Calm your mind.
Think of a question and write it down.
3.
MAKING A PREDICTION
Shuffle the cards, pick one and make a note
of its number
Replace the card, shuffle again, pick a card
and note its number.
Remove cards 7 and 8 from the pack and shuffle
again, then pick a card to get a third and final number.
You now have three numbers, turn
the page to find your destiny.
(if you are using the Digital
Prediction System, your destiny will appear in a new window)
THE
HOUSE NUMBER.
The Time Traveller's Guide is divided into eight Houses. The first number tells you in which House your prediction can be found. There is some advice at the beginning of each House which is of a general nature and reflects the overall philosophy of the I Ching.
THE
SITUATION NUMBER.
Each House is divided into eight Situations. The second number is the number of your Situation within the House. Flick through the House until you find your Situation. The text will tell you something of the background to your question. The Situation's title is often particularly important in understanding the oracle.
THE
PATH NUMBER.
In each Situation there are six Paths, these are the most important part of the oracle. The Path text is always the master text. The Paths are the oldest part of the I Ching, the foundations upon which it is built.
A good Path in a bad Situation is better than a bad Path in good Situation.
Using the I Ching is in some ways like gambling,
the idea is to use the oracle to improve one's odds of success in any venture.
There are three things to consider when evaluating
a prediction.
1.
THE HAPPY FACE GUIDE.
By each path are little faces,
,
or
.
These tell how strong your hand is.
2.
THE PATH TEXT.
Gives you advice on how best to play your particular hand.
3.
THE SITUATION TEXT.
From this you learn to see your Path as part of an overall game plan.
There are three possible reactions to the Guide's answer.
1.
INESCAPABLY APT!
Most of time the answer will be what you knew along anyway. We delude ourselves for all sorts of reasons, but when confronted by the truth we know it well enough. Once you know what you should do, it is only a matter of deciding how it should be done.
Consider the three factors above again for advice on the best way to proceed.
2.
I'M NOT SURE?
Sometimes the text of the answer has no obvious relevance to your question. In this case it is usually best to continue as you would have had you not consulted the I Ching. Nine times out of ten the meaning will become clear and you can act accordingly.
3.
THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT!
Very occasionally the answer you get from the Guide goes completely against your instincts. In the final analysis you must rely on your own feelings and act accordingly. The process of consulting the I Ching is not infallible and it is possible to get an inaccurate answer. However, it is wise to study the advice carefully and remember it just in case it turns out to be right.
You now know the basics of consulting the I Ching and should be able to evaluate the answer you have received. It must be stressed that predicting the future is an art that takes time to appreciate, even if you have the TTG to get you off to a flying start.
The relationship between a practitioner and the I Ching is deep and beautiful. At first there may be some confusion , but as time goes by mutual trust and understanding develops.
One should not try for too much too quickly. If you slavishly try to obey the Guide in the early stages, your independence may be compromised, which will weaken you.
The correct approach is to absorb the wisdom of the ancients into your inner self so that over time you find yourself acting in harmony with the I Ching quite naturally.
If you go against the advice of the oracle and have cause to regret it the next time you get the same advice it will be much easier to accept. No great amount of self discipline is required, the instinct of self preservation does the work for you.
In the same way, where you have followed the advice and had success no huge effort of will is needed to repeat the experience.
Best of all is when you've done something bold that you wouldn't have normally had the courage to do. After that the Guide becomes a treasured friend.
When you have been using the Time Traveller's Guide for a few years, the Situations will become like old friends. Every time you open your copy, memories and understandings of your past and future resonate in every line of text.
The advice in these pages and in the book is designed to develop your free will. If used correctly it will help you make decisions quickly and accurately. The Guide is never supposed to replace your personal assessments, but to add to them.
This book is essentially a 'get you going' guide to the I Ching, naturally there is lot more to learn. The I Ching is one of the worlds oldest books and its influence in China is like the influence of the Bible in the West.
However, to make best use of this book, it is necessary to understand a little of the concept of destiny that the I Ching is based on. In the West, most people fall in to one of two camps when it comes to fate. There are the Fatalists who believe that destiny is pretty much already written and that 'if the bullet has your name on it' so to speak, it will get you. Then there are the Rationalists who believe there is no plan and everything happens by chance.
In the East, ideas on fate are not so black and white. It is believed that the future has already been mapped out, but that the details are not finalised until the events actually occur. This means that individuals can alter their destiny by changing their behaviour right up till the last moment. Left to chance, most of us will end up being quite ordinary, however with the right adjustments we can soar up to a 'better self', with greater achievements and pleasures.
The aim of using the I Ching is self improvement. The principle being that a healthy, balanced and successful person is a benefit to the world in general.
